Medicare Partnership? Looks Like Growth. Feels Like a Takeover.

There’s something interesting happening in the insurance industry. At first glance, it looks like progress. You’ll see press releases celebrating partnerships. You’ll hear words like “legacy,” “impact,” “support,” and “growth.” You’ll see successful agents smiling and saying how excited they are about the future. When you look a little deeper the story shifts. Behind the cameras and branding is a different kind of transaction, one that rarely benefits the person whose face is on the flyer.

Lately, I’ve watched a string of mid-sized insurance agencies “partner"  with large corporations. These deals are dressed up in language about family and shared values but when you strip it down, they’re buyouts. Ownership gets exchanged for a check, and often a seat at someone else’s table. A seat without real power.

Some of these agencies are rooted in underserved communities. They were built by people who earned trust and served neighborhoods that the big players ignored until they saw profit potential. Now those same builders are being told they’re leveling up by giving away the very thing they built.

I watched a recent video where a Black woman agency owner walked through her office which was full of Black agents, local energy, and real purpose but by the end of the video, she was in a corporate boardroom surrounded by people who didn’t look like her, talking about systems and scale.  It’s easy to think you’re being helped when you’re actually being used.

These deals are rarely as equal as they appear. The payout might be good for a moment, but the long-term shift in control often leaves the agency owner managing someone else’s agenda. If production drops or agents leave, the pressure is on her not the company that now owns her book.

Let’s talk about the kind of clients some of these deals are built on. There’s a whole market strategy focused on dual-eligible seniors.  These are people with both Medicare and Medicaid who are often enrolled in plans at soup kitchens, housing projects, and senior centers. The sales pitch says it’s about "helping", but it has felt to me more like sharecropping with a food card. The clients become numbers, the agents become foot soldiers and the ones getting rich  (at least in the past) are sitting in air-conditioned offices analyzing data.

I’ve always rejected that type of business model (and looked sideways at people who pushed it) because I didn’t want to build a business on the backs of vunerable people. Instead, I’ve focused on growing an ACA business with integrity and purpose. I help my clients when they age into Medicare.  Thankfully I don’t have to chase people, cold call or ride every trend. It's been a slow, but steady and strong build.

This post isn’t to judge those who sell their agencies it is to name what’s happening so others can think twice before giving up their ownership for what looks like opportunity. Ask yourself: Am I building something I own or am I just renting space in someone else’s empire? There’s another way to do this that might not come with press releases or polished videos, but it comes with peace, control and freedom.  If you have EVER worked in a "job" you hated ( I HAVE) and wanted to "Just Quit" you know what I mean! This is Just Quit and Live and I’m Ridea Keeping It Real.

If You Know What You Want It's Already There

I’ll never ever forget an object lesson that my father taught me.

It was 1991 and I had just graduated with my undergraduate degree.  I had decided not to relocate with Hoechst Celeanse and to finish the last 40 hours I needed for the degree. They had offered me a relo and most everyone was taking the package.  I went looking for all of my options and one of them was to go back to school full-time for a year and finish a degree that was taking forever going part-time. It was a smart decision, but I graduated during a horrible recession and there weren’t many jobs. I was a single parent with a 6-year-old son. Yes, I had a degree now, BUT I didn’t have a job.   It was a difficult difficult time.

I was broke  when I walked across that stage…dead broke.

My first mentor ( I’ve had many throughout my career) had invited me to D.C.  She was well-off, owned her own business and her graduation gift to me was an airline all-expense paid trip to D.C. When I left town I felt hopeless.  When I got back from D.C. I was on fire.   I had seen the possibilities. The world was my oyster.  I had confidence.  I had a great attitude about life…even though I was still without a job and broke.

My father had watched me struggle looking for a job, he’d even tried to “network” for me with the folks who came into his barbershop.  When he saw me after I arrived back from D.C. he noticed the difference in my attitude.  He asked me if I had gotten a job and I told him: “no, I got a better attitude”.  He told me that was all I needed and to come with him.

He had a 7-11 coffee cup in his hand.

He sat the cup on the table and told me to look at the cup.  I did. (My father was the kind of man that you did what he told you to do :-).

Then he said he wanted me to stare at the cup.  Look at it really good. I did. THEN he said; “Now I want you to find the cup in the wall.”  I was confused. He explained the instructions again, I was to look at the cup, then look up at the blank white wall and try to see the cup.

I looked at the cup, then looked at the wall and saw nothing.  I did it about 5 more times and there was nothing there but a wall.

Around the 6th time I did it I could see the outline of the cup in the wall.  I told my father that I thought I knew what he was talking about because I could see the cup. He said: “NO, you don’t have it yet, do it again.”

I did it again, and again, and again.

SUDDENLY I looked up at the wall and the cup was EMBEDDED in the wall.  It wasn’t an outline, it wasn’t an image,  it was THE CUP.  I jumped up and said:” I SEE IT DADDY, I SEE IT.”

Then he said: “Okay now you’ve got it.  WHATEVER YOU WANT IN LIFE IS ALREADY THERE BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IN ORDER TO FIND IT.”

Now, What do YOU want?  Not what you don’t want…what DO you WANT?  You have to see on the inside before you can find it on the outside.

Just Quit ≠ Giving Up — It Means Letting Go

Let’s get something straight quitting isn’t always giving up. Sometimes, it’s just being wise enough to let go of what’s not working anymore.

Letting go is not about weakness. It’s about strength. It’s the opposite of holding on for dear life

when it’s already causing pain.

Here’s a quick exercise to feel what I mean:

  • Look around and grab something near you. Now hold on to it, tight. Squeeze. Really grip it.
  • Feel that tension? Is your arm stiff? Your hand sore? Maybe even your shoulders are tightening?
  • Now... just let go.

Did you notice it didn’t require much? Just a choice. A decision.

The pressure stopped the moment you decided to release it. That’s what letting go feels like.  It's a relief. A return to peace.

What Can You Let Go Of?

The truth is, we carry more than we need...thoughts, habits, stuff, people, beliefs, jobs, grudges, pain. It adds up.

Here are just a few things that may be weighing you down:

  • Old beliefs that don’t fit anymore

  • Thoughts that loop in your mind

  • Feelings that keep you stuck

  • Habits you know aren’t healthy

  • Overcommitment or chronic busyness

  • Clutter (physical or emotional)

  • People or relationships you’ve outgrown

  • Careers that don’t align

  • Financial stress from decisions you regret

  • Even faith practices that no longer reflect your truth

Letting go doesn’t mean abandoning your life it means actively choosing what belongs in your life now.

How to Start Letting Go

Step 1: Decide
Start small. Let go of a thought. Seriously...one thought. Something you think about yourself that you know isn’t helping.
Tell yourself, “I’m going to stop repeating this thought.”
Notice it. Name it. Then choose to release it. That’s the practice.

Step 2: Feel, Then Release
Feelings are real, but they don’t have to be your ruler.
Recognize what you’re feeling, own it, and then give yourself permission to let it pass without acting on it. You don’t have to stay angry. Or stuck. Or sad. Feel it, then let it move on.

Step 3: Let Go of the “Someday” Myth
You don’t have to wait for the promotion, the partner, the weight loss, or the degree to feel content.
Stop tying your happiness to a finish line.
Just quit believing joy is always out there somewhere.
Decide to be content right here, right now.

Ready for the Deeper Work?

Maybe you’ve already been doing the mindset work and now you’re ready to deal with bigger patterns:

  • “I will Just Quit procrastinating.”

  • “I will Just Quit numbing my emotions with food, spending, or scrolling.”

  • “I will Just Quit ignoring my body, my spirit, or my true self.”

Hard? Yes. Impossible? No. This is the part where transformation lives.

The Hardest One? Letting Go of Who You’ve Been.

Sometimes the biggest shift is releasing who you thought you were.
The version of you that’s tied to your past, your pain, or other people’s expectations.
That self might’ve kept you safe, but is it helping you grow?

Eventually, we all have to let go...of control, of ego, of identity.
Why wait until your last breath to finally understand the freedom in surrender?

Letting go isn’t giving up.

It’s waking up.

The Most High and the Teenager: A Lesson in Relationships

Have you ever seen a grandparent look at their teenage grandchild and feel a little sadness?

It's that moment when the teen is glued to their phone, chatting with friends, and doesn't seem to realize the treasure of wisdom sitting right next to them. The grandparent might think, “If only they’d ask me about life, I’ve got so much to share.” It's a common scene, and while it might make the grandparent a little sad, their love for the grandchild never fades.

Now, think about this: could this same feeling be how the Most High looks at us sometimes?

In our fast-paced, phone-distracted world, it's easy to get caught up in the buzz of daily life, the noise of social media, and the rush of modern distractions. We might forget to stop and ask for guidance, to seek the wisdom that's available to us through faith, prayer, and reflection. Like the grandparent, the Most High might look at us with a similar sadness, knowing that we have so much to gain but are too distracted to receive it.

But here's the good part, just like the grandparent, God still loves us, unconditionally. No matter how distracted we may become, His love never wavers. Just like the grandparent would still offer their wisdom whenever the grandchild is ready to listen, the Most High is always there, ready to guide us when we turn our attention toward Him.

When Layoffs Happen: Finding Strength in Uncertainty

When Layoffs Happen: Finding Strength in Uncertainty

With the recent layoffs throughout the Federal Government it has left many federal employees—and others—wondering what’s next. It’s a tough moment. Whether you’ve lost your job, are worried about being next, or just feeling stuck, it can feel like the ground has shifted beneath you. But this can also be a turning point, an opportunity to rediscover your strengths and explore new possibilities.

Step 1: Understand What You’re Good At

One of the most powerful things you can do right now is identify your strengths. This isn’t just about what job you had—it’s about what you bring to the table.

Try This Tool: CliftonStrengths (StrengthsFinder) and read the book. It is a popular assessment that can help you discover your top natural talents. Knowing your strengths can:

  • Boost your confidence

  • Help you explain your value in interviews

  • Guide you toward work that feels meaningful

Below is an Example of How You Can Use Knowing Your Strengths

What I’m Good At         What I Enjoy Doing             Where This Could Lead
Organizing data         Solving problems             Analyst, Project Management
Leading teams         Helping people grow             Coaching, Team Leader roles

Navigating the Uncertainty of Career Changes

Career changes can feel overwhelming, especially when they aren’t by choice. Whether you’re a federal employee facing potential layoffs, someone leaving a job you’ve outgrown, or dealing with an unexpected job loss, the uncertainty can be frightening but change, while unsettling, also brings opportunities.

Facing the Fear of Change

Losing a job or deciding to quit can stir up anxiety about financial stability, career prospects, and personal identity. Here are some common fears and how to address them:

  • Fear of Financial Instability: It’s natural to worry about money when facing a job transition. Start by reviewing your savings and creating a temporary budget. Look into unemployment benefits or severance packages if applicable. Check unemployment benefits.
  • Fear of the Unknown: Not knowing what comes next can be daunting. Instead of focusing on what’s lost, shift your mindset to what you can gain. A career change can be an opportunity to pursue a job that aligns better with your goals. Explore job search resources.
  • Fear of Starting Over: You may worry about competing with younger candidates or adapting to a new industry. Remember, your experience is valuable. Focus on transferable skills and consider additional training if needed. Find free courses on Coursera.

The Bumper Car Theory of Life

Life in the Bumper Car Arena: Dodging, Crashing, and Thriving

Life, my friends, is basically one big bumper car ride. You get in, all excited, thinking you’ll glide smoothly around the track. Then—BAM! Someone sideswipes you. A second later—WHAM! You hit a wall you didn’t even see coming. And just when you think you’ve got the hang of it, your car gets stuck in the corner while someone rams into you repeatedly with zero remorse.

Welcome to adulthood.

The State of the Bumper Car Arena

Some people are out here cruising like they’re in a Cadillac commercial, barely getting touched, others are driving like they have no insurance, hitting anything that moves. There are those poor souls who don’t even have bumpers anymore—one more hit, and they’re completely out of commission. You know the type: the person who’s one bad customer service call away from a total meltdown or the coworker whose emotional airbags deployed years ago, leaving them raw and exhausted.

So, how do we not just survive this chaos but actually thrive in it?

1. Check Your Bumpers

Your bumpers are your resilience. If yours are worn down to the metal, every hit is going to hurt a lot more. Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and scented candles (though those are nice) it’s setting boundaries, getting enough sleep, and sometimes saying, “No, I will not cover your shift again because you ‘forgot’ you had exercise class.”

My Eye-Opening Visit to a Dietitian: What I Learned About Nutrition

Visiting a dietitian was one of the most informative experiences I've ever had when it comes to nutrition. She broke down everything in a way that was easy to understand and gave me practical tools to improve my eating habits. Here’s what I learned:

The Plate Method: A Simple Way to Eat Healthier

One of the most valuable lessons was using The Plate Method to create balanced meals. She showed me a plate that visually divides portions:

  • ½ of the plate – Non-starchy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, carrots, peppers)
  • ¼ of the plate – Protein (chicken, fish, tofu, beans)
  • ¼ of the plate – Starches (whole grains, potatoes, quinoa)

This method helps with portion control and ensures I’m getting the right nutrients in every meal. Honestly, this should be taught in schools!

Embracing Change: Starting the New Year by Letting Go

The start of a new year is a powerful time for reflection and renewal. As we turn the page on last year,

we’re gifted with a fresh opportunity to create the lives we truly want. But creating something new often requires letting go of the old — habits, relationships, or mindsets that no longer serve us.

Why Letting Go is Essential

Letting go isn’t about giving up or failing; it’s about making space. Imagine trying to fill a glass that’s already brimming with stale water. To add something fresh you need to pour out the old first. The same principle applies to our lives.

When we hold onto unfulfilling jobs, toxic relationships, or outdated beliefs, we deny ourselves the chance to grow. These attachments can weigh us down and prevent us from embracing the possibilities waiting just beyond our comfort zones.

Signs It’s Time to Let Go

How do you know when it’s time to release something? Here are a few clues:

  1. It Drains Your Energy: If a situation, person, or habit leaves you feeling exhausted rather than energized, it may be time to reevaluate.

Ended "Just Quit Thing" Website

After 12 years I discontinued my www.justquitthing.com webpage.

I was able to transfer my blog post over to this blogspot account but unfortunately all of my pictures are gone because they were tied to that webpage...maybe overtime I will be adding pictures to the previous blog posts...or maybe not.

I'll still be blogging but when you look back on old post the pictures or videos will not be linked!

Coming Full Circle - Just Quit and Live Works Again

This month I came full circle and had a synchronistic moment.

It was my first day manning the United Healthcare Medicare kiosk in Walgreens.

Many of my previous “jobs” and experiences came into place:

  • NC Credit Union – Setting up booths and tables to market the Credit Union, greeting the public and answering questions
  • VA Credit Union – Creating and teaching a robbery training class…it was a public place and anything can happen
  • NC Police Department – Keeping my head on a swivel and paying attention even if it looked like I wasn’t paying attention
  • VA and NC Art Shows– Setting up for art shows, greeting and talking to people

A gentleman walked in who was about 35-40 years old, dressed in a nice pair of jeans, a shirt (don’t remember the color), some copper-colored tennis shoes and a hat with the same copper color in the initials on the cap.  He said hello and I responded back.

I then noticed him in the check-out line which had grown to about 4-5 people.  I don’t remember what he purchased but heard him ask about the flowers and the cashier saying they were for Breast Cancer Month.  He picked up a bunch and continued to wait in line. I thought how nice and thoughtful that was of him to get them for someone who had been through or going through breast cancer.

He paid for his items and walked towards ME, handed me the flowers and said…These Are for You.  I thanked him and just thought WOW that was a special moment because the reason I was not still working an 8-5 making 6 figures and sitting at the booth in Walgreens was due to getting breast cancer in 2019, that turning me around and KNOWING I had to take what I knew to help others with valuable information.

Insurance is too dang important to continue to be confusing for average everyday people.

Here I was in a synchronistic moment as Carl Jung called it.  Knowing at that very moment you are right where you are supposed to be.  That’s a good feeling!

Here’s to others using their scars to make a difference, do something meaningful and live the fullest of their lives.

Just Quit 2.0 Journey-Month 1

On August 1, 2022 I early retired…meaning I “Just quit” working for someone else in exchange for a paycheck and benefits.

No More:

  • Logging on at 7:00,
  • Weekly routine WebEx meetings,
  • Reviewing and approving purchase orders,
  • Team meetings,
  • Answering “emergency” phone calls mostly because of poor planning or folks not following up, and
  • “Managing” which can be akin to a form of babysitting for those who don’t understand they shouldn’t need that level of supervision.

It’s been almost 20 years since I “Just Quit” the last time BUT somethings have not changed:

  • Going a day without health insurance waiting on COBRA to kick-in is nerve-wracking,
  • Not having a title and big-name organization to associate with feels familiar, and
  • Shaking off what feels like chains and the freedom of that feeling.

When you early retire you don’t just stop.

You shouldn’t just stop.

I’m not just stopping.

I am pulling together EVERYTHING I know how to do and like to do:

  1. Presenting information (every job I’ve ever had)
  2. Reviewing quotes/information (all my purchasing jobs)
  3. Sitting at a table marketing a product/company (my marketing job at the NC Credit union)
  4. Training others (My training jobs at the VA Credit Union and NC Police Dept.)
  5. Looking at details/compliance/forms and analyzing information (My compliance job at the Shipyard)

Pulling all of this together and seeing how far and fast it takes me by using my past experiences and skills.  Learning this new industry and products from my mentor and following a proven process.  Do I think it will yield amazing results? Yes, I certainly do.

I’ll blog this new journey on “Just Quitting” at almost 60 years old.

Just Quit and Live

Here I am again. Leaving a 9 – 5 (this one was a 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. which is one reason to go…what normal person wants to start work at 7:00 a.m. even if it is WFH? )

Here I am again. Wondering why most people tolerate all the stuff that happens in Corporate America.

Here I am again. Looking at my spreadsheet and thinking yeah I can do this.  I have enough money to do this.

Here I am again. Ready and willing to go where the wind and spirit leads me.

Here I am this time. With more experience.

Here I am this time.  Eighteen years later from the last time I “just quit”.

Here I am this time. Blogging the experience.

Here I am this time. Knowing this time there is no going back to working to make someone else rich for exchange for a check and health benefits. (This seems so ludicrous to me!!!)  If I do nothing else with this insurance license I will help people who feel chained to their jobs because of health insurance.

Here I am this time.  Knowing the harder I work, the more real people I will help and the more money I will make.

Here I am this time.  Knowing I’ve got one more shot to leave a legacy that will catapult the next several generations to the top.

Now. I will do this.

Now.  I will thrive.

Now. I will soar.

Now. I will look back and be grateful I’ve been blessed with what I call “the knowing” and brave enough to trust it.

Here I am again. Here I am this time. Now.

Working From Home

It’s almost been two years and many are still working from home.

It’s a 20 steps commute.

There’s no more packing a lunch.

No more matching assessories with clothes.

No more starting the car when it’s cold.

There are WebEx meetings.

There is just work.

No listening to conversations that you don’t want to hear.

All of the “nonsense” is cut out.

There is just work.

And if you don’t like the work…Just Quit and find other work or something else.

You Are Not Crazy and You Are Not Alone

It is 2021. It is almost December 2021.

It is a time when many have to make a decision to Just Quit their jobs because of a Covid Vaccine Mandate.

Just Quitting a Job is a decision that I made almost 20 years ago. It is a decision that is facing me again, but today’s decision seems ominous. It seems sinister. It is not singular. It is a decision a mass number of people have to make at the same time. Just Quitting is not an easy decision because it is life changing. For those in the throws of making the decision think of three things:

  1. What would you do if you weren’t afraid of change?
  2. What are your dreams for yourself and your family, and how will your decision impact those dreams?
  3. On your death bed which decision will you be happy that you made?

Think on these things today and know that to Just Quit and Live Your Life can be a beautiful thing.

(As I type this I realize how very much this blogging platform has changed since I’ve blogged! I also probably need to change the name of this site to Just Quit and Live)

Be Creative When You Work The "Just Quit" Steps...Connect the Dots

The job I have is making me sick, physically sick just thinking about being there makes me ill.

It’s where hard work is ignored and politics are constantly at play.

It’s a place that discourages development and growth of its team and encourages “top down” mechanics under the guise of being a company run on new age defining principles.

It’s a place where I feel creatively stifled even though I have a creative role.

I have no desire to work within the field I’m in anymore and there is so much more to life that I have true interest in.

~Worker Living in CALIFORNIA

Letting Go of Negative Emotions with "Shhhh"

Even if you are not angry, stressed, or frustrated right now,

you have been in the past.

Those past negative emotions are “stored” in the major organs of your body.

Its time to breathe out these negative emotions.

Do you want to know how?

Breathe in deeply and slowly through your nose

…now…

Breathe out through your mouth making the sound “sshhh” all the way until the end of the breath.

This is an ancient form of detox that works on both the emotional and physical levels. It  will not only release stored negative emotions, but it will calm down your mind and all its chatter.

Try it – It works!
