Doing Our Thing

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I am no longer happy with my current job. And my part-time business, though the income is not stable, is promising.

~Worker Living in OHIO

something today

Meditation/Reflection:

How can we not have OUR own thing?

If we don’t like the job we are on; how can we not be thinking about and pursuing OUR thing?

Why wouldn’t we be?

Hobbies and Careers

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I am having an issue with my colleague; as well as; I have come to realize that I am no longer interested to pursue design as my career and that it should continue as my hobby.

~Worker Living in SINGAPORE

hobby

Daily Meditation/Reflection:

Maybe our careers could be hobbies and our hobbies could be careers?

Hmmm…by the way… hobbies & passions…they are the same thing.

What Do You Want?

You are reading from the book  Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I need time off, to redefine myself, to focus on education in the field, to volunteer, and make room for a new opportunity that is more aligned to my interests. I am hoping to find a similar role in a much smaller, slower paced environment, so there is a better work life balance.  I am suffering from anxiety and taking medication to make it through the week now.  I want to get back to healthy.

~Worker Living in NEW JERSEY

key

Meditation/Reflection:

If we know what we want, it is already there waiting for us.

We have to know what we want or we will miss it if it shows up.

What do you want?

Set your next career goal.  Just clearly set what role you want to play and on what field. No matter what, eventually you are going to have to set sail for that new destination…it’s just a matter of time.

Finding Our Purpose

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I hate what I’m doing. I hate my responsibilities. I dread coming into work each day. I’m overwhelmed with the work I’m doing. I feel like there is a greater purpose for me.

~Worker Living in Ohio

soul work

Meditation/Reflection:

There is a greater purpose for each of us.

Finding our purpose requires that we find our path…our life path…our life’s work.

That path is a daily journey and that journey requires that we take steps.

Every step leads you down a path; even those paths where we feel like we are going sideways or backwards.

Keep taking the steps on your journey, on your path, towards your purpose.

Be Simba

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I want something new and I know that I won’t find it here because there is nothing left for me! My boss loves me, but will never help me get to another point in my life.

~SOUTH CAROLINA

 king

Do you remember what the line was in the “Lion King” when Nala was looking for Simba? Rafiki told Nala, Timon and Pumbaa; “You won’t find him here.”

Simba had gone back home to claim his crown as the King.  Claim your crown as Queen or King of your life. Run towards your destiny.

Be Simba.

Stop Suffering in Silence

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I did write out a long rant, but decided to delete the text in this box due to it (potentially) giving away who I am.

~NEVADA

You are not alone

Who are you going to talk to when you are at a place in your life where you are trying to figure out how you can quit your job even if you don’t have another one?

There are a very very limited number of people you can share your situation with. This means there is hardly any support.  You sit there and you suffer in silence.  You feel alone. You feel crazy. You feel like nobody can really help you get through this.

Remember: there are other people all over the world who are in a similar situation as you are.

Many are reading the same words that you are reading. Today, collectively we will say: “We are the ones who are awake and are working on making good decisions to take responsibility for our lives.  We will get through this.”

Turning It Around

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

There is no room for further growth, and there are no trainings in career growth.

~Worker Living in UGANDA

turn your life around

Sometimes we have to just admit that we are at a dead-end.

Dead-ends are okay if you realize it and take action.

This time in your life is just over…time for something new…just turn it around and go in a different direction.

Knowing What We Know

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I’m miserable and was thrown into a field without any warning, training or help.

I work for a company where all of the higher-ups lie and tell those “beneath” them that they don’t trust them. I’ve signed my name on countless papers and had to bite my tongue over and over again to protect the higher-up men from sexual harassment suits only to be demeaned and cursed at by them later.

I work for a company that could collapse at any minute.

~Worker Living in NEW YORK

Honest

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Today, we might have to admit to the things that we know.

Things that we know we wouldn’t be proud of if we had to shout it out to the world.

Things that we know that if they ended up in the local or national news we’d be embarrassed that we are involved.

Things that we know aren’t ethical or that hurt people, or societies of people.

We might have to admit that we know what’s happening and to our involvement.

Then… we get to be adults and DECIDE what we are going to do about what we know.

We Are Not Rubbish

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I’m rubbish at my job. I am treated awfully by both staff and customers, and I have no free time to study.

~Worker Living in the UNITED KINGDOM

You are Valuable

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

No, I’m not rubbish. I’m not waste material.  I’m not worthless and I’m not useless.

I have skills.  I have abilities.  I am a capable person.

Aspects of this job make me feel horrible but I will not allow it to kill my spirit.

I AM valuable.

Learning to Wait

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

I’ve been hunting for jobs for almost two years now but not even one call for interviews. I just can’t take it anymore to wait for the offer while having to face endless audits and unbearable workloads.

~ Worker Living in MALAYSIA

waiting

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Waiting is hard.

We wonder: “What is going on?” “What is taking so long?” and “Why isn’t this working out for me?”

Our plan, the jobs we are interviewing for, the location of the jobs, or the type of jobs might be all wrong for us.

We have to trust that there is a path that we need to find. Waiting and rejections along the way is the universe working things out to smooth out our path for us.

Learn to wait for what is right for you.

Finding The Light Within

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

Coming to work at a job that I am not passionate about every day is draining my soul.

~ Worker Living in AUSTRALIA

Light Shining Brightly

Today’s Meditation/Relection:

Our souls might feel drained.

We might feel flat.

We might feel depressed.

As long as we are breathing then there is a light within.  It might just be a pilot light, but IT is there. It might not be burning brightly today, but the light is there right inside of us.

Sometimes we just have to hold onto knowing that the light is there and not give up on looking for something to ignite the flame.

Today, ask for guidance to lead you to doing something you are passionate about that will ignite the flame that wants to burn brightly inside of you.

Trusting Ourselves

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

A: The stress and pressure is difficult to bear. I am being manipulated and used to work the job of multiple people with no extra financial incentive. There is a limited amount of support and trust existing between myself and those above me. The accusations never stop! I am always defending myself, biting my tongue, and being viewed through faulty lens.

~Worker Living in OHIO

trust

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Today, I will trust myself.  I will trust in my abilities. I will trust that I will get through the trials on this job.  I can trust myself to make the right decisions about what to do next.

Head Space

You are reading from the book
“Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

A: I need head space. There is no work/life balance possible.

~Worker Living in the UNITED KINGDOM

Mindful

Our minds are always thinking. Yes, we can meditate and stop the thinking mind and we should cultivate meditation into our journey.  It only helps the process. However, we can’t stay and live on a meditation cushion. We have to live our lives.  We have to work our jobs.

If we see our lives, right now, today as a meditation then we can have the head space that we need to figure things out…not by thinking… but by doing.

Make your everyday activities a meditation.

Really see people and listen to them. Walk when you are walking. Drive when you are driving.

Every time your mind goes into that nonsense of jumping around to this thing and that thing…go back to paying attention to faces, people, the sky, the trees, the birds, or whatever you are doing. It will bring today alive and you will be amazed at the clarity you will get, even while you are still in your crappy job.

Just pay attention to what is happening in your life today.

Just for today.

Our Sanity

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

A: I cannot stand this corporate environment that is killing everybody. I do not want to be a part of this insanity anymore.

~Worker Living in ROMANIA

 change

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

People from all corners of the world are experiencing work stress.

There are other people who feel that their work environments are killing them too.

People are asking for the insanity to stop.

We are NOT the crazy ones. We are the community of people who are waking up and calling it what it is…insanity. Anything that you do to help yourself will help others know that it is possible to live an authentic life.

Once you pull up out of your situation…and you will…please reach back and help someone else.

Share your success story and how you did it.

Freely pass on the “Just Quit” Steps and be proud of your journey.

Feeling Lonely

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Q: Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another job lined-up?

A: Because I feel trapped and lonely.

~Worker Living in CHINA

find yourself

It doesn’t matter where you live.  You can live in China with a billion other people and still feel lonely.

It is okay to feel lonely if you can allow yourself to feel it, go through it and get to the other side of lonely.

The other side of lonely has nothing to do with having someone around you. It has everything to do with first being okay with being alone with yourself, no matter the circumstances.

You will leave this world by yourself…alone…so don’t struggle when you feel lonely…embrace it…grow from it…get to know and love yourself.

Listening to Our Bodies

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Today’s Workplace Story/Situation:

I am under so much stress. I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack. The panic attacks I’m having are getting worse. ~Worker in FLORIDA

listen to your body

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Our bodies will let us know when enough is enough.

You might be able to fool your own mind.

You might be able to fool your family.

You cannot however fool your body. Your body has a voice and if it starts to scream you have to listen.

Today listen to your body…you only have one body…you only get one body…that’s it…so listen up.

Connecting With Our Values

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Today’s Workplace Story/Situation:

Having held the positions of CEO and VP in other charities, I can see the potential of (and the very real efficiencies to be had at) my current employer.  Sadly there is the lack of will to change anything. It is impossible for me to forge funding partnerships with the knowledge that we can’t deliver on our commitments. The environment is demoralizing and ridiculous, not even pretending to operate as the guardian of public donations. It’s embarrassing and I have no confidence here.  ~Worker in CANADA

values flow

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Once we find ourselves in the situation where our promises and our reputations are on the line all of our dealing and actions become measured from that point on.

There is this almost invisible line that you can cross.  It happens seemingly in an instant, with one deal, one handshake, one piece of paper that they want you to sign, or one broken promise  –  you realize that you just-can’t-do-it-anymore.

You can’t work at a place that affronts your values, and does not have a culture of doing what you feel is ethical and right. That’s one decision…you can’t do this anymore.  The other decision is deciding HOW long you HAVE to stay and how you are going to do your job until you can leave; because you KNOW you HAVE to leave.

Doubting Ourselves

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Today’s Workplace Story/Situation:

I was absolutely miserable and I felt fake because I was managing people but I didn’t care or believe in the work I was doing. I have already quit. It’s been 2.5 months now and I’m beginning to feel very lost and anxious.

~Worker in CANADA

Doubt

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

There are phases that we will go through after we “Just Quit”.

It’s like any other lost that we suffer. When we leave a job and are accustomed to another job to go to; somewhere along the way we begin to wonder if we made the right decision.  Doubt starts to set-in.

We forget how painful it was on that job.  We remember, but we are not still in the situation so we don’t remember ALL of the details. We begin to doubt ourselves and our decision. It’s a natural reaction if things don’t work out as quickly as we planned.

Remember: “Just Quit” is not a rash decision. DO NOT “Just Quit” without going through the Steps.

Having Little To Show

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Today’s Workplace Story/Situation:

I dread going into work every day. I am constantly stressed. I work full-time and have very little to show for it. It’s a dead end job, no chance for growth or advancement. I’m not appreciated by the bosses. I work too hard and I’m paid too little. I’m in tears almost every day at work. Overall, I’m unhappy. Over the last few months, I’ve found myself extremely unhappy, maybe even depressed. This job is the main source of this.

~Worker in Connecticut

little to show

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

Many of us have been working full time for years.

Some of us have been miserable for a while.

Some of us don’t have much to show for our hard work and our brave front.

We have to ask ourselves if we continue on the road we are on, what will happen when we CAN’T work any longer?  What will we do then if we still “have little to show”?

If we are working hard, working full time, doing what we think we MUST and we have little to show now, what does the end look like for us?

We have to ask this while we still have time to make a transformational change.

We have to ask while we are still in good health and of working age.

What do you have to show RIGHT NOW from all of your hard work?

Checking In

You are reading from the book  “Just Quit” & Live

Today’s Workplace Story/Situation:

I am depressed every day when I go to work. None of the tasks are challenging or interesting anymore. I do not feel my talents are used. The bureaucracy at a company this size impedes a lot of productivity. I can only bring myself to work maybe 1-2 hours per day, while spending the rest of my time job-hunting. I’m almost completely checked out.

When I think of my commute (30 minutes – 1 hour, each way), I cringe. Nothing makes that time go by faster. If I see my boyfriend after work, I’m short and clearly unhappy. He and I have both noticed that when I have an interview or other promising job prospect, my mood heightens markedly.

~Worker from TENNESSEE

checking in

Today’s Meditation/Reflection:

We know when we are checked out and are not plugged in. We feel totally lost. We’re wondering HOW did we get here.  We can continue to go ‘round and ‘round trying to find answers, but maybe there aren’t many answers. We are just checked out. We need to check in somewhere else and do something else.

If you’re looking for another job, just keep looking. Something will break… eventually. Everything happens at the right time… just wait. ~Ridea

"Just Quit" & Live The Book

“Just Quit” & Live the Book is finally here.

I wrote this book so that people would know that they are not alone and are not crazy.

The book includes stories from those who stumbled on this blog and completed the survey. We now  have over 2,100 entries from  76 countries from around the world.  Many situations and stories  are very heart-wrenching. Workers answered the question:

“Why do you want to quit your job EVEN if you don’t have another one lined-up?”

Additionally, I will begin posting  daily with the entries from the book.

Below is today’s entry, location and meditation:

Happiness                                                                                  May 11

I have been at a career for 10 years that causes me a lot of anxiety and turmoil. I have tried different areas within the same career and have finally realized I am not well fitted for this career. I am unhappy and it affects my health and my personal relationships. No job is worth ruining your personal relationships or your health. I want to learn new skills and be in a different more fitting field for me, but I am obsessing with having to spend one more day at my current career I cannot even think about anything else.

I have small children that require care, and we have no other family support. My current job doesn’t give me enough hours to pay for day care, and my hours are so crazy that no day care is open at those times. I do have a husband and he is supportive of this decision and encourages me to find something that makes me happy so that my career unhappiness doesn’t bleed into our lives and make him unhappy too.

~Worker Living in TEXAS

Today’s Meditation:

Today just say: “I want happiness. If happiness exists; then I want to be happy. Please, God/Higher Power help me to find happiness in my career.  Help guide me in the direction of what will make me happy.   Please.  I just want to be happy.” ~ Ridea

Happy
