Self-Made or Never Made...What's It Going To Be?

Because I do not feel fulfilled.

I do not feel I am living my purpose.

Furthermore, I am fed up with management treating professional adults like elementary kids.

I feel I will be free for the opportunities to flow my way.

~Worker Living in CALIFORNIA

Self Made or Never Made

Step 11 – Living our purpose.

When we start living our purpose for being then opportunity will start flowing our way.

Doors will open.

Ideas will come.

People will appear.

The possibilities will seem endless.

Your Dues Have Been Paid In Full...Now Go...Live Fully

I’ve been incredibly unhappy the past few years.

I started by taking jobs that no one wanted to do in my department in order to “pay my dues”. Now I’m doing the job I had thought I wanted but I’m still unhappy.

The staff has changed since I first started out, and my boss who mentored me is gone. My bossy co-worker is my new boss and doesn’t have any idea of the weekends, evenings and happiness I sacrificed in order to get here. He doesn’t trust me to do my job without looking over it, and requires everything to be just so.

There is no room to grow in this department, and I feel as though I’m not developing any skills in my profession.

I don’t enjoy the work, which also has tight deadlines and causes me so much stress that I’m exhausted when I get home.

I have random fits of tears and depression, panic attacks and I can’t get my digestion to get back on track. I also feel like it’s preventing me from losing weight despite all efforts.

It’s not what I see myself doing in the future.

~Worker Living in CANADA

Paying Our Dues

We have “paid our dues”.

We have all already “paid our dues”.

Stop “paying your dues” and start doing what you are capable of doing.

Why are we acting, doing, and being less than we are?

If you can’t wrap your head around the fact you don’t need to “pay your dues”; then pretend like it’s 10 years down the road and you have already “paid your dues”; after that time what would you do?  If you know the answer to that and you feel you are capable of doing that right now…then do it now…why wait?

Clarity: Knowing What To Ignore & Letting Go of What Is Not Working

I am thinking about quitting my job without another one because I need clarity.

I spend so much of my life working or in school and worrying about if my decision to quit will affect my entire family.

I know I need to take some time off to find some clarity, but I get so nervous that I always talk myself out of it.

My brain is fried and my body is weak. I just can’t take the fact knowing that I am still working in hell.

~Worker Living in OHIO

clarity

Today, ask for clarity, right now and today.

We need clarity to be able to make a good decision.

We need clarity to know what to do next with our lives.

We need clarity to know how to move forward.

Ask for what you want and need.

Clarity.

Emotional Intelligence Gives You The Power To Move Forward

I have nothing but contempt and feel as if my life is being wasted.

~Worker Living in NEW JERSEY

colors of life

On Plutchik’s color wheel of emotions, the emotion of contempt is between rage, anger, loathing and disgust.

If I have contempt for my job today I will ask myself:  “Why am I living in this swirl of negative emotions?

How can I balance it with joy, trust, and anticipation?”  It’s not a trick question.  We need to balance negative emotions with positive ones.

How can we do that today?

Get Beyond the WHY and Move on to HOW to Connect to Your Purpose

This job is such a spiritual, emotional and integrity disconnect.

I fantasize about escape every day and can’t breathe.

I know there has to be more to life.

~Worker Living in FLORIDA

your purpose help others

In order for us to get connected back to ourselves, our hopes, our dreams, and our purpose we have to know if we are disconnected.

If we KNOW we are disconnected it doesn’t really matter why.  We all know the reason why…we needed a job…we need a salary…we haven’t been able to find another job…ect…ect…ect…, but NONE of that truly matters…we are still disconnected.

Get beyond WHY and just move on to HOW.

How are you going to get connected?

What type of job (maybe it’s not a job; maybe THAT is the problem, you think you need to find ANOTHER job); profession; cause; or endeavor will connect you to your authentic self.

There is only ONE you. Connect back to your hopes, your dreams (even those that seem dashed), and most importantly, connect back to your purpose.

See Your Boss Today As Just Another Person With Problems, Hopes and Dreams...Just Like You.

I feel unappreciated and undervalued and my boss does not listen.

My job is  manual and the data entry is killing my arm. I pulled my side muscle lifting boxes.

The boss is always making snide remarks about someone, and I got one of my co-worker a job and it has been a h*ll hole ever since.

~Worker Living in ARKANSAS

be the boss

Our bosses are just people.

They are just people like we are.

They are people with problems, families, issues, hopes, and dreams.

Have you ever considered that people can’t give you something that they don’t have to give?

Have you ever considered that your boss might be miserable as well?

Let’s sit back today, regardless of how we feel about our bosses or how miserable they are making our lives and realize that they are just people.  We won’t work for them always, one day we will be gone, we will move on or they will move on, but that boss has to live with themselves…always.

Use The Bubble of Protection For Negative Work Environments

I really hate my job, the work atmosphere is very negative, and it’s a long commute.

I feel sick all weekend especially Sunday because I have to go back into work Monday.

I feel work is all about the next mistake, not about how well you do the job.

Depressed Because of Your Job? You Will Get Through This & Tell Your Story One Day.

I feel unappreciated and humiliated at work.

I don’t care about learning insurance and my skills as a therapist are becoming less and less relevant. I hate being talked down to and yelled at by clients and providers. I hate that my time is micro managed down to the minute and it’s starting to overflow into my personal life.

I am in physical pain every day, and have become so depressed that my appearance has changed. I don’t like what I see in the mirror.

I am depressed on the weekends just thinking about having to go into work on Monday and am completely drained on the weekends.

I’m too tired, discouraged and too depressed to look for another job, and I’m afraid that they will notice that I look depressed and not offer me a job.

~Worker Living in ILLINOIS

Depression is real.

Sometimes we don’t know we are depressed until we are in a deep depression.  We then look around and ask ourselves HOW did I get here?  We feel like we are in quicksand and sinking fast.  We can’t see a way out.  We wonder if others notice how flat we feel.

We look in the mirror and don’t recognize ourselves.

Yes, depression is real.

If you have been depressed before think about how you came out of it.

If you can’t remember, hold on to the fact that you DID come out of it.

If you are further into a depression than you feel you have EVER been, then seek help.

Why, because depression is real.

Today, Choose Hope. Allow Your Best Future To Emerge.

It is an unhealthy, abusive environment for me.

I find myself in tears one way or another related to the job.

I take as many vacation days as I can just to avoid having people yelling at me all day.

I have already had one breakdown because of this and I consider doing physical harm to myself every day just to find ways to get out of a day of work.

I dread coming in every day to the point where I am generally late…which only adds more stress.

This job gives me migraines and other severe health issues due to stress that has started manifesting more and more frequently.

In addition to that I have extreme and lasting emotional duress due to this job… it is a very negative job and I’ve been doing it so long that when I have time off there is a noticeable difference in mood and attitude towards life in general…which I have noticed is seriously hindering my ability to not only look for new work but to look like a positive loving candidate that will be able to contribute to another company.

You Don't Have to Live in A Cubicle. You Don't.

I do not like working in a cubicle and I am not passionate about what I do.

I feel stuck and unmotivated at my job.

I am just doing it for a paycheck, and I don’t even need as much money as I am making.

I feel there are more fulfilling and enjoyable job opportunities out there for me. I want to be in the right mindset before looking for jobs, so I am going to quit, take a month off, and then look for another job.

There might still be fear; but we can work through the fear with confidence in our decision.

There are some things that we know that we know:

  • We know that working in cubicle land doesn’t work for us.
  • We know that we feel stuck.
  • We know we are in a dead-end job.
  • We know we are underappreciated.
  • We know we need to “Just Quit”.

Finding the Good In Your Life and Your Job

I will be financially secure with the help of my fiancé.

The job I’m at causes me to feel stuck and unable to take life by the reigns spiritually.

I feel it is a dead end job and I have used up all the resources and mental structure building that it can provide me.

I am able to confidently take away from this job acquired knowledge about how to better speak with people with all different mind sets and situations.

It has helped me gain more patience with people and better listening skills, along with empathy.

I feel that now while working at this job it is keeping me from devoting more time to helping loved ones and friends. The energy that I have to assist others is exhausted from work.

~Worker Living in MINNESOTA

We don’t have to continue to be a fish out of water.

We don’t have to continue to use skills that we don’t like and to us are not our strongest skills.

We don’t have to try to fit into a round hole when we are a square peg.

We can find where we fit.  We can find our flow.

If you don’t fit where you are today and you know it…great…you know what you DON’T want to do.  Don’t go looking for another job doing that. No matter how desperate you get don’t try to convince yourself that it’s easier to get another job with the same title or in the same industry you are currently in.  Seems plausible, but it probably won’t make you happy, because it’s not where you fit.

Find your flow.

Another "Just Quit" Story...People Are Waking Up All Over The World...

The below survey entry came in yesterday, September 12, 2014. It is not in the book, but I wanted to honor this person’s request to tell their story to the world.  Here you go:

*I already quit my job, and just wanted to take the survey and tell someone else my story*

I was physically in pain everyday.

I worked for them for 2 years and suffered through back to back groin sprains, stiff fingers that couldn’t bend to touch my palms in the morning, swollen feet after work, bruising on my legs, scratches up and down my arms, exhaustion, and I experienced my first breakdown at work where I had to collapse into a crouching position.

I’ve applied for my jobs’ manager position (which I did qualify for) but they were telling me to work my way up (from the bottom) to get to the manager position. Meanwhile they continued to train an undergraduate student in the manager position I wanted and hired them directly INTO the manager position upon graduation!

My body was physically breaking down when I decided to quit.be true

My decision was solidified when my manager requested mandatory overtime (I had to use my vacation time to call out of work for that day – If not I probably would have dragged myself into work for a 2nd mental breakdown).

The next week I submitted my 2 week resignation letter. I could not save money.

I too feel like something good is going to turn up.

I quit 8/27/14 and I feel awesome, relieved, happy, free and my body feels better too.

There is still some nerve damage but it too will heal.

Quitting my job has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

Feeling Like A Fish Out of Water? STOP Trying To Be A Fish.

I start to panic on Sunday evening when I think about going to work on Monday. I stay up as late as possible to postpone the inevitable.

I feel like a fish out of water at my job.

I have been getting sick frequently, gained weight, and have skin problems because of the stress.

I stopped caring about the things I used to enjoy. I truly don’t want to do anything in the evenings or weekends because I’m just so exhausted from my job.

~Worker Living in OHIO

Stop Trying To Be A Fish

After we make our list of why we think we need to “Just Quit” then we need to counterbalance it and ask ourselves: “Is it possible that things could get BETTER on this job? Is there anything that might happen on this job, in this place that would make me want to stay?”

Listen for the answers.

You are reading from the book “Just Quit” & Live

P.S.

Half the time the problem we have is that we try to be like everyone else.  Or we do what other people think we should do.

Until you have the courage to be YOU and do what YOU are meant to do…you’ll always feel like a fish out of water… even if you SHOULD be happy (because you have a job or you’re making decent money).

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR LIFE?

Three Magic Words

Thursday, September 12, 2019

Why Are You Here? What Are You Suppose To Be Doing With Your Life?

I don’t enjoy what I do and need the time and stress-free experience to find out what I truly want to do.

The enjoyment of the job is no longer there and there is no motivation to try and excel at what I’m doing.

It has crept over into my personal life, making me less happy as a person overall.

~Worker Living in VIRGINIA

shine

We need to find our authentic selves.

Sometimes in order to do that we need to eliminate all of the noise and static of our current job so we can find out what we really want.  That is what “Just Quit” is  about:  letting go of what we know is not working (and will not work) EVEN if we don’t have something to replace it with right away.

We can make preparations to have some time to find our authentic selves (and still be able to eat of course)… that’s why planning is so important.

Having A Strategy

I’m not inspired by what I’m doing.

I’m working very hard and achieving nothing.

I don’t agree with the strategy or lack of strategy of the work and how it has been put together.  The company has no strong work ethic ethos, and lots of people doing the bare minimum.

There is no transparency in pay and often projects are under resourced meaning that we fail to deliver quality work on time.

~Worker Living in the UNITED KINGDOM

strategy

How many of the places where we work have well-thought out AND COMMUNICATED strategies?   Not Many. We all know this, and we also know when there really isn’t a cogent strategy AT ALL…communicated or not.

We know when everybody is just showing up, but not working towards the same thing.  Sometimes all we can do is know this, and maybe do the bare minimum (if you can) while you reserve your mental energy to pursue your own interests, develop your own personal life strategy and work it…sometimes that is all we can do.

P.S.

If you find yourself in this situation today; continue to work hard EVEN if there is no strong work ethics in the organization. Just stay focused and develop a clear strategy for your job.  There is something powerful about doing the right thing even when you don’t see the point.

Just pretend like you are the owner/president/executive director/in the corner office.  This is your organization. Now ask yourself what would YOU (as the owner) want YOU (current job holder) to do? Just pretend…who knows…maybe one day YOU may be the owner…have employees…need a clear and communicated vision..need a strategy to reach the vision…and…change your corner of the world…or the world.

I always go back to Microsoft’s vision that they basically achieved inside of  20 years…it happpened…A desktop computer in every home running Microsoft Office.

NOW what is the vision for YOUR life in the next 20 years?

What is it????

There is NO NEED for a strategy if you don’t have a vision.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION?

It is not a mistake that you are in this situation…maybe it is to wake you up…have a vision and strategy and stop just going through the motions.

Are You Doing Something With Your Life That Matters, That Is Meaningful and Worthwhile?

The type of work that I do, I am not happy with. At the end of the day I do not have a sense of satisfaction or gratification that I did something meaningful or worthwhile.

I am in a position where I scam customers for their money in return for very little to them. I do not “help” people in a way that I want to. I wear a suit and tie and I clean cars in 100+degree heat. I did not go to college to do this and I deserve so much better.

I work 50 hours a week and I am physically and mentally drained from work. I do not spend time with family or friends like I used to and I have a very bad attitude because all week I take nothing but bullsh*t from customers complaining over nothing. I bend over backwards to make them happy and make my managers richer while my pay check stays the same.

I need to do work where I am helping others in a positive fashion and where I can make a difference. My efforts need to be a part of the “bigger picture”.

Working at this company is horrible, the working conditions, the business practices they teach us, and the terrible management invasion of privacy is something I absolutely hate. I need to find something else!

~Worker Living in WEST VIRGINIA

Escape

Today, step back from your life and look at the “bigger picture”.

Put your life into perspective.

What is the big picture you ask:  one day like everyone else we will no longer exist.  None of us know the day it will happen. All we know is that it is an appointment for everyone.

Are you doing something with your life that matters, that is meaningful and worthwhile?

Are you helping or are you hurting others?

Really take a look at the bigger picture and put this one job into perspective.

You are reading from the book “Just Quit” & Live

P.S.

Today is Grandparents Day.  If you are a grandparent think about the legacy you want to leave your grandchildren. Don’t ask what can I do? Say yes I will do something and then start doing it.

If you still have a grandparent living…call them…or go see them and listen to them. Yes, they will ask about your life but try to turn the tables and ask about them, their stories, and just listen.

"Just Quit" is About A Journey and A Purpose...It's Not About A Job

After six years with my current employer I am starting to feel like I am going in circles.

I am not really in a good position to advance because I work remotely and yet I am one of the longest employed marketing professionals in my segment of the company.

I find I don’t have the patience for the interactions. They feel meaningless.

We are doing neat things as a company but I don’t feel like there is any celebration of what we do. Criticism is just heaped on top of criticism and there is always some opportunity that we missed that is reason for disappointment.

I don’t really believe anymore that the path that I am on is right for me. Maybe it was two, three, four years ago. But I am back in the same place that I have been several times and I am left wondering when will it be enough.

You should always be letting go to let come.  Your passions will change.  Your interests will change.  You will gain skills and perfect them over time.

Things will get boring as you do them over and over again. That’s ok.

You are just growing. You may have outgrown your job and feel like you are “going in circles”.

It’s just time to go back to the Steps so you can move forward on your journey.

Endings Lead to Beginnings...Begin Again...

The company culture does not support the unit, or me.

It affronts my values.

I don’t respect my boss because she chooses not to trust me.

~Worker Living in CANADA

endings and beginnings

Knowing what we value helps us to find a profession that we love and are passionate about.

If we know that where we are currently working affronts our values then we need to determine when we will bring this job to an end.

The cycle of life consists of new beginnings followed by an ending.

Birth, death, and rebirth.

Use the fact that you know what you value to help you bring an end to this particular job,  so you can start doing something you are passionate about.

It's Labor Day 2019 - A Great Day For A BreakThrough

SEPTEMBER

The shell must break before the bird can fly.

~ Alfred Tennyson

I’m at a glass ceiling.

The job is boring. They have not had a raise in five years at this company.

I feel that life is passing me by.

~Worker Living in GEORGIA

breakthrough

We need to breakthrough.

It’s not about the glass ceilings that companies or organizations erect; but the ones that we erect in our own minds.

It starts with the broken record of negative thoughts that swirl around in our minds about our situation, about the possibilities, about our dashed dreams, about the useless degree, about the missed opportunities, about the lack of ideas, about the ideas that didn’t work….the breakthrough starts with your thoughts.

Think Differently Today.

P.S.

If you’re reading this and in the U.S. more than likely you have a day OFF of work.  OFF for Labor Day.  So, make a good use of  this day.  How do you do that?  Ask yourself this one question and just wait for the answer to emerge…

If I could do ANYTHING with my LABOR (physical and mental effort to create goods and services) what would it be?

NOW…once the answer emerges (and it will, if you keep asking that question)…MOVE towards it…do something to create that good or service…JUST START and then keep going…(BTW…what is the point of all of your experiences, jobs, books you’ve read, places you’ve been, skills you’ve developed, things you know….if…you are not going to DO something with it all…that MAYBE only YOU can do?  What is the point? It might take a LONG time for things to materialize, but it will NEVER happen if you don’t START.  Create SOMETHING with your labor that you are proud of and that improves you and your corner of the world. )

labor:

The aggregate of all human physical and mental effort used in creation of goods and services.

Labor is a primary factor of production. The size of a nation’s labor force is determined by the size of its adult population, and the extent to which the adults are either working or are prepared to offer their labor for wages
